It's only a matter of time, really. Soon, the Decepticons will follow me instead of Megatron. I've learned all I can from him, and the lust for power that makes us so similar is the same thing that will forever prevent us from working to together. Neither one of us could ever tolerate the other being in control ... not for very long, anyway. And I've just about reached my limit. Megatron may have been a great warrior, but he lacks the style and subtlety that I've mastered. With me in command, the Decepticons would truly have someone to look to for the leadership needed to win this war ... and who wouldn't rather be looking at me than Megatron's bullet-headed grimace?

There are several reasons why Starscream remains among the functioning. He is an intelligent and capable warrior and leader, with significant physical strength and offensive capabilities. In jet mode, he's our fastest as well as the most skilled flyer. Ruthless and cruel, he makes an excellent lieutenant, despite his blatant aspirations to my position. And those aspirations are probably why I should have eliminated him long ago. Yet ... there is something about him that makes me hesitant. Perhaps I do feel some similar, some connection with him .... were I in his position, wouldn't I also do everything in my power to become leader? But I cannot allow my fascination with his behavior be my undoing; if Starscream were ever to become a serious threat, he would be dispatched in a very final manner.

One of the first warriors recruited to the Decepticon cause, Starscream is a vicious warrior, and a gleeful killer. Most Decepticons keep score of how many Autobots they take out, but Starscream carves himself little trophies out of their pelvic gimbals. As leader of the elite Seeker squadron assigned by Megatron to launch high-speed, surprise assaults on Autobot strongholds, and one of the old guard among the Decepticon leadership, he enjoys more freedom of opinion than many other Decepticons. Megatron is tolerant of his sarcasm and belligerent ambition only because Starscream is simply too efficient an engine of destruction to do without.

It is not only his skill as a fighter that gives his Autobot victims pause. Before the war, he was an explorer and scientist, with many friends among the Autobots - Jetfire and Grimlock among them. Even then he was a bully and a manipulator, but few who knew him suspected he could be capable of the atrocities now attributed to him.

Before the Great War between the Autobots and Decepticons broke out, Jetfire was a partner and friend to Starscream. The two were as close as brother; the one as calm, rational and slow to anger as the other was jealous, erratic and arrogant. When Starscream joined the Decepticons in attacking the Autobot held cities of Cybertron. Jetfire was slow to choose sides. He was hesitant to join in the slaughter of largely defenseless Autobots, but did not want to take up arms against someone he'd considered a friend.

When the full extent of the treachery of the Decepticons became clear however, Jetfire joined the Autobots without reservation. The anger he felt as his betrayal by Starscream never waned. He fought his former friend at every turn. The sky over many a battlefield filled with fire as the two master fliers engaged in dog fight after dog fight, neither ever completely destroying the other.
